Don't ask how it happened, but one day would find Rush returning to his room to find an envelope on his bed. The neat, loopy cursive on the front spelled out his name, leaving no room to doubt that the letter was, in fact, for him. Whenever he chose to open it, he would find a letter and a piece of paper folded and taped shut into a smaller rectangle. On that second piece it would say: Don't open until you read the letter! And on the letter he would find the following written:
Dear Nicholas,
It looks so strange to see your name written out like that. I hardly ever called you that, did I? But I've been sitting here just going back and forth on how to start this letter for ages now, so this is what you get.
If you haven't skipped to the bottom (or back) of this yet to see who it's from, let me solve the mystery. This is Christine, writing to you from beyond the Grasp's reach. I wish I could give you some useful info from the other side to maybe help you and the others get free of it too, but I can't. I was there one moment and pulled through the wall the next. I'm just glad I was carrying my dog at the time, or the little guy would have been left behind.
Anyway, I've wished for awhile now that I could reach out to the rest of you on the Egime or wherever you are now, but it's only been recently that the opportunity presented itself. All I can say is a delivery boy has left this note for you in the blink of an eye and neither you or I will ever see him again. This will be my only letter to you. So I guess I'd better make it good, huh?
I don't know why or how I remember everything that happened to me while I was a candidate, but I'm glad I do. It would certainly make things awkward with Dean now if I didn't. Oh, that's right. He and I ended up in the same place. It's basically America in his time, but he can't find any evidence of demons, ghosts, or other things he usually hunts. We have no idea if this is another strange multi-versal hub like we've been stuck in before, but all signs point to no. Hopefully that means we're settled now, and that we won't disappear one day.
Since you're like a father to me, I wanted you to know that I'm safe and I'm happy. I showed up here straight from the ship. Dean was here, and things like licenses and paperwork had all already been taken care of. Don't ask me how. We think maybe a Nysgod broke us out and set us up this way, but we have no idea who. I'm a nurse at the local hospital. It's entry level, but they're impressed with my skills so I think I'll do well here. Dean works at a mechanic's shop, fixing cars and rebuilding classics in his spare time. And our dog Winnie holds down the fort while we're at work.
I wish I could see you again, or even just talk to you. I remember you telling me about those stones you used on your ship, to move your consciousness across space. I could use one of those right now if you had the other.
But since I can't, I can only hope you're reading this right now. And I know you don't take well to unsolicited advice, but too bad, because here it is. Let someone in. Please. I know what it's like to build up walls or to push all the bad things away and ignore them. It doesn't make things go away, and it doesn't stop the hurt. But if you try to face things alone, that doesn't lead down healthy paths either. So have a little faith, and give someone your trust. And please be as happy as you can.
And don't ball up this letter and throw it away, however tempted you might be right now!
All right, I have to end this so I can get it to my errand runner before he leaves for good. Here's a picture of Dean, Winnie, and I for you. Make sure you show it to Pasha! And Ben. I'm sure Ben's come back by now.
Love, Christine
On opening the folded piece of paper that had been taped closed, Rush would find a picture of the three, Dean's arm extended as he held the camera out. Christine was tucked up close under his other arm, and a little Pomeranian was seated in her lap, looking somewhat in the direction of the camera. Behind them was a beautiful vista: a valley covered in evergreen trees. It was perhaps a national park, or at least some spot that had taken a hike to get to. But if Rush wanted to know for sure, all he had to do was turn the photograph over. On the back was written:
